About 6,000 people who reside at Orisunmibare community in Lagos State will soon be rendered homeless following a 10-day demolition notice by the state government, SaharaReporters has gathered.

Residents said reasons for the eviction notice by the state government remains unknown to them.

They asked Nigerians to appeal to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to reverse the anti-people policy.

“Security reasons are usually named as the rationale behind these evictions. The big question is; how does rendering 6,000 households with women and children homeless a way to resolve a security situation?

“Our Governor is a forthright man, elected by people of Lagos State whose majority population are poor people; living in precarious housing.

“We can longer afford to allow repetition of these cruel and inhuman episodes of rendering our people homeless; the spiral effect is too costly.”

The Lagos government’s decision on Orisunmibare is coming a few months after hundreds of people residing at Monkey Village, an rural settlement in the Opebi area of Lagos, were rendered homeless following the demolition of the settlement by the state government.

In August 2017 also, hundreds of residents were displaced when the state government stormed Iwaya axis in Lagos-Mainland Local Government, demolishing several structures, in order to return the land to its original owners.

The demolition of structures in Iwaya came barely 48 hours after lifeless body of a child was found in a shrine, where the demolished buildings were erected, with her throat slashed.
