Some aggrieved residents of Abuja have taken to the streets to protest the extension of the tenure of six area councils’chairmen and councellors by the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Muhammad Bello.

The tenure of the chairmen and  councillors ended on Thursday, May 19, but instead of allowing the newly-elected officials to be sworn in, Bello reportedly cited a court judgement, and extended the officials’ tenure by one year.

Unhappy with the development, residents in the Gwagwalada Area Council, Friday morning took to the streets to kick against the act of the minister.

The aggrieved protesters barricaded the roads and made bonfires, calling on the FCT authority to reverse the decision.

FirstNews learnt that the development led to obstruction of vehicular movements in the area.
