Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Ogun State Chapter, on Tuesday, urged motorists especially commercial drivers in the state, to desist from taking local alcoholic drinks and marijuana before embarking on a journey to avoid road accidents.

PSN equally charged youth to eschew harmful drug substance or drugs including morphine, tramadol, codeine, Colorado(weeds) benylin expectorant, anafronil, mollie, among others, that might put their health into hazard and cause them life-threatening ailments while young or become old.

Pharm. Adewale Adenugba, the Chairman of PSN, while speaking with newsmen during an outreach organised by the body to sensitize members of the public particularly commercial drivers on the effect of drug abuse, said that most crashes on the road would have been averted if the drivers were not on drugs.

Adenugba, made this known at the Flag off of the 2024 Annual Pharmaceutical Week tagged “Health Walk Against Drug Abuse and Medical Outreach”, where commercial drivers and market women of Ita-Oshin Motor park and Garage, were given free medical treatment including, checking of B.P, HIV/AIDs test, blood sugar test, eye test, among others as well as free medicines and eye glasses.

He urged the drivers to abhor the popular notion that local drinks and marijuana makes them see clearly and gives them extra energy while driving on the road as such only result to accident and put their lives and that of passengers in jeopardy.

The chairman warned them to consider their wives, children, health hazard as well as unexpected death such intakes might cause to their lives making it difficult for them to continue to take the role of breadwinners of their families, insisting that the safety of their lives and passengers matter most in their transport operations.

He said” I won’t say drug abuse is a major cause but it is the cause because a driver that is not in his right sense will not drive wrong, such driver will over speed and will do whatever they feel like doing which of they are normal in quote they will not do it, but once they are high they can do anything, so taking not this cannabis or local gin “Ogogoro” is also the high cause of road accident.”

“We are in the park today we all know in the park there is this syndrome among our drivers they will drink all those”Ogogoro”, sorry to who it May concern and start doing anyhow and their own form of alcohol is harmful, alcohol is also a drug it you need to know, but the way the use it the abuse of it causes something else and we need to enlighten them. Most of the people in the park they take cannabis, they take weed, they take anything thinking it makes them high, make them do their work in the right way but it is not, the thing it is causing to their bodies on the high side.”

“Most of us especially our youth they don’t know the damage this thing is causing, there are being lured into it by their friends and youthful exuberance. We are in the heath sector, you see alot of them with different kind of ailments the are usually between 19 and 40.”

“Even on the streets we see young boys getting insane , some are totally mad because not drug abuse when they used drugs like Colorado and others. You see them on the bike, are pulling the shirts off and start shouting unnecessary this is the effect of the drugs. So if you take a drug and abuse it there is no how it will not affect you.” he added

Adenugba, therefore, tasked both federal and state governments to improve their strategies in tackling the menace, in order to save the youth and other citizens of Nigeria from health hazard and drug related offences.

“The government is doing the best they can but I still want to ask them to improve on it, and we should not forget the fack that we are all part of the government. The government do have a role to play, let our law enforcement agencies be up doing but I will say the government still have. We are doing our best and have many programme around that the state and the FG is involved too” he stressed
