Gov Diri swears in commissioners, LG chairmen, emphasizes fiscal responsibility

In a ceremony held at the Government House in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Governor Douye Diri swore in 14 new commissioners and eight newly elected chairmen and vice-chairmen of Local Government Areas on Monday. The event marked the official induction of these officials into their respective offices, signaling a new phase of governance in the state.

The newly appointed commissioners include legal luminary Biriyai Dambo, SAN, who assumes the role of Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, and Maxwell Ebibai, who will oversee the Ministry of Finance. Other appointees include Moses Teibowei (Ministry of Works and Infrastructure), Koku Ebiuwou Obiyai (Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Productivity), and Dr. Emelah Gentle (Ministry of Education).

The rest are George Flint (Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning), Komuko Akari Kharin (Ministry of Power), Perepuighe Biewari (Ministry of Lands and Survey), Brodrick Preye (Ministry of Special Duties (East)), Ebieri Jones (Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment), Peter Afagha (Ministry of Mineral Resources), Mrs. Elizabeth Bidei (Ministry of Women Affairs), Michael Magbisa (Ministry of Special Duties (West)) and Daniel Igali (Ministry of Sports Development).

Governor Diri charged the new appointees to uphold the principles of good governance, emphasizing the need for fiscal responsibility and prudent management of resources. He urged them to focus on building upon the achievements of his first tenure and to prioritize projects that would positively impact the lives of Bayelsans.

In his address, Governor Diri underscored the importance of financial management, urging the commissioners to ensure transparency and accountability in the handling of public funds. He also called on the newly elected Local Government Area chairmen to prioritize the prompt payment of salaries and to refrain from excessive borrowing, signaling a shift towards more responsible fiscal policies.

Furthermore, Governor Diri called for unity and collaboration among the newly inaugurated officials, stressing the need for collective efforts to drive development and progress in the state. He expressed optimism that with dedication and commitment, they would be able to fulfill their mandate and deliver on the promises made to the people of Bayelsa State.
